Our History

1973 – 1980

In the early 1970s, members of St. Giles Presbyterian Church in NW Calgary recognized that many seniors in the area were living alone and in need of companionship. They began a drop-in centre for seniors in the church’s lower hall, which formally became Confederation Park Senior Citizens’ Centre in 1973.

The “Tree of Life” from the church’s stained glass window became the Centre’s logo. By 1975, the Centre had moved into its own building in Confederation Park, and in 1980, an addition known as The Social Room was built to support its growing community.

2020 – 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly affected seniors across the globe. Confederation Park adapted quickly, offering Zoom classes, YouTube fitness videos, frozen meal programs, and food hampers for those who were homebound.

In 2021, following government restrictions, the Centre’s longtime building was decommissioned. After nearly 50 years in the same location, Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre relocated to the Triwood Community Association, where it continues to thrive.

2023 – Today

In 2023, Confederation Park celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala, open house, and year-long festivities. That same year, the Centre helped launch the Super Membership program, giving members access to multiple activity centres across Calgary.
Today, the Centre remains a vibrant, volunteer-driven hub offering diverse programs; from art, dance, and language to fitness and social clubs, fostering connection, laughter, and lifelong learning.
